About
Emidio Pepe is a true pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Abruzzo region, located in the beautiful hills above the Adriatic Sea. Starting in 1964, he perfected the art of producing artisanal and age-worthy wines made from local grape varieties Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Pecorino. Today the estate consists of 15 hectares, the vines which are grown biodynamically are trained along pergolas to keep the hanging fruit cool in the summer months. The family’s expert knowledge of the soils and microclimate ensures the grapes are of the highest quality. Following vinification the wines undergo a long ageing process at the winery, which boasts an unbelievable library of back-vintages. Each bottle of Montepulciano which is over twenty years old is decanted by hand back into bottle before release: a delicate process with a long history at Pepe, adding to the estate’s fame and recognition. This is the only form of filtration carried out, to remove sediment which forms over time. With help from his daughters and ambitious granddaughter Chiara, Emidio Pepe’s philosophy is being carried forward with great success worldwide.
