About

Our trip to Alsace in May 2023 provided a fascinating insight into viticulture and winemaking in the region, which being on the border with Germany, has a unique heritage. At La Grange de l’Oncle Charles, located in Ostheim, we were treated to a tasting and picnic in owner Jérôme François’ uncle’s barn turned winery. Jérôme and partner Morgane are a young couple making wines from traditional varieties which are co-planted and include Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. The vineyards are dispersed and cover the villages of Riquewihr, Schoenenbourg, Rodern, Rosenburg, Zellenberg and Hunawihr. La Montagne du Scarabée is Jérôme and Morgane’s most structured and powerful wine, from the Grand Cru vineyard of Kaefferkopf, famed for its granite and limestone soils. There is also La Belle Coline from Grand Cru Shoenenburg en Riquewhir, refined, delicate and mineral. The love and respect of nature is clear to see, horses do most of the work in the vineyard and the rest is carried out by hand. The result is a range of hugely enjoyable wines with a very strong identity, all named after respective Lieux-Dits translated from Alsatian. They are precise and energetic, with lees ageing adding delicate textures on the palate. The bottles themselves are also stunning, thanks to new and revamped labels.
