ABOUT

Bass Philip is a leading producer of Pinot Noir in South Gippsland, Victoria. These are refined and detailed wines that are Burgundian in style, with a sumptuous perfume and fruit intensity that encourages longevity in great vintages. Bass Philip was founded by Philip Jones in 1979 and the first vintage was 1984. The wines are a testament to sustainable farming practices such as low-density planting, there is a clear focus on producing the highest possible quality from the Bin 17k to the Estate, Premium and Reserve labels. Whites from Chardonnay are also produced, gifted with subtle buttery, textured notes, accompanied by seamless acidity. Biodynamic since 2002, the vineyards are dry farmed on deep, mineral rich soils. In the past twenty-five years the estate has grown to fourteen hectares in total. Cooler temperatures and regular rainfall in Gippsland ensure an abundance of freshness and add an inherent minerality to the wines. Full ripeness is achieved in the hot summer months when temperatures surpass 30ºC, yields can be so low that a single vine barely makes half a bottle of wine! In 2020 the estate changed hands and was acquired by renowned Burgundy winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier, who now oversees all vineyard management and winemaking. These are exciting times!
